WELCOME to the Bright Morning Star site. My name is David Mitchell. I’m a biblical theologian, musical director, and musicologist. Bright Morning Star is my publication site.
My new book, Awaiting the Millennial Kingdom, is now available in hardback. It’s quickly becoming my most popular book. You can read bits of it here. On that page, you’ll also find the chart of Six Millennial Days and 123 Jubilees, which you maybe saw in this video here.
My forthcoming volume is called A Director Of Music Looks At The Psalms. It’s planned for late 2025. In it I expand my earlier work on the redaction, messianism, and music of the Psalms, but it also has a devotional element. It features twelve favourite psalms, together with my latest thoughts on the Director of Music.
Apart from the new book, my most popular book is about dying Messiah ben Joseph (2016), the best-kept secret of Rabbinic Judaism. (Thanks to everyone who has reviewed it on Amazon.) Its follow-up was Jesus: The Incarnation of the Word (2021) which shows how Jesus’s genealogies fulfil the messianic promises to Judah, Aaron, and Joseph. Or there’s How To Be Happy For Ever (No, Really!!), a little book about the Lord’s prayer. Or you can drink at the wellsprings of worship with The Songs of Ascents (2015). And my Message of the Psalter (1997) is perennially popular.
If you’d like to see the Messiah ben Joseph podcasts I made with Israel College of the Bible, in August 2023, you’ll find them on the Messiah ben Joseph page. You can also see some of my scholarly papers and articles.
Or check out the Mysteries tab up top.
If you want to know more about my work as a pastoral musician, then see the Music Ministry tab. Or if you want a new song for your worship time, or kids’ service, or school assembly, or Christmas carols, listen to some of these songs below. You can get free Sheet Music and Backing Tracks in the Psalms, Hymns, & Songs page.
